Abstract
This article provides an overview of the health of the seven Class I railroads, based on interviews with those railways’ CEOs. The year 2007 brought many positives: increasing revenue each quarter, growth in coal, chemical and grain traffic, and acquisitions that may change the face of the North American rail landscape. But the economic downturn and increasing expenses for diesel prices also took a toll. The outlook for 2008 is similar - a blend of optimism and pessimism. CEOs are watching the weakening housing market, which affects movement of certain goods, but they expect to see increased intermodal traffic growth. An accompanying article describes the upside ethanol is expected to provide if oil prices continue to climb, but CEOs are concerned about legislation that could limit their railroads’ ability to reinvest capital in infrastructure improvements and expansion of capacity.
