Abstract
This Map of the Month illustrates Illinois Central’s (IC) melting-pot roots—some 88 lines that made up IC’s ‘Main Line of Mid-America” as late as 1971. Lines included the Dunleith & Dubuque line, the oldest line, which was admitted in 1869, and the Louisiana Midland, the most recent to be admitted in 1967. The railroad ran lines as far south as the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana to Minnesota and South Dakota. In 1972, IC’s merger with Gulf, Mobile & Ohio changed the map. Now the old IC is part of Canadian National.
