The Manitoba Transportation and Governmemnt Services, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool conducted in July 2000, in partnership with the Saskatchewan Department of Highways and Transportation, a field experiment using trucks equipped with Central Tire Inflation (CTI) technology. Two side by side test roads were monitored during the experiment, with an equal axle weight test conducted on a primary grid road and an equal payload test conducted on a main farm access road. In each case the common two lane road carried low pressure vehicles on the south bound lane and high pressure vehicles on the northbound lane. The experiment showed that reduction of tire pressure had the effect of reducing damage on the test roads. Statistical tests on the rut depth of the inner wheel path provide evidence that rutting damage can be prevented or delayed when reduced tire pressures are used.
