Abstract
More than 410,000 people were killed on roadways in the past decade. About a quarter of all roadway fatalities and about 45 percent of crashes occur at intersections. Off-the-road crashes comprise about a third of roadway fatalities, and speeding is responsible for about one-third of fatal crashes. The report in this issue addresses the problem of roadway fatalities, suggesting that preventative measures such as better markings and signing, wider, brighter road markings, road-edge rumble strips, speed management techniques and better work- zone safety requirements be implemented.
