Abstract
Nearly 50 years after it was first proposed the Mill Plain Extension (MPX) is providing a better link between downtown Vancouver and western Vancouver and the Port. The route spans some of the oldest residential areas in the city, industrial land and recreational facilities. Railyards and port facilities are also part of the mix. Community involvement was a top priority. Of the 80 properties needed for the right-of-way, only one had to go to condemnation. Relocation was required for more than 120 residents. The demolition of some 35 homes enabled improved parks and road plans. Touches included customized decorative bases for light poles. Another crucial component was the 750-ft. bridge over the railyard. New urban pedestrian trails, bike trails and parks were also part of the project.
