A partir de la propuesta de reconstrucción de la concepción materialista\nde la historia y considerando los estudios sobre historia de los medios\nde comunicación de la escuela de Toronto, este artículo propone la\nextensión de la noción de tecnologías de información y comunicación,\npara comprender a los denominados medios de comunicación como\nfuerzas productivas o elementos estructurales de las distintas formas de\ncomunicación humana al interior de los modos de producción. Así mismo\nse analiza a los medios de comunicación en su condición de medios de\nproducción de subjetividad, a la manera de una prótesis o extensión\ntécnica del propio cuerpo humano. Esta reconceptualización permite\nuna articulación con la tipología de los modos de producción de signos,\nteorizados por Umberto Eco, y los dispositivos de saber poder de Michel\nFoucault, en la perspectiva de una unificación teórica. De esta manera,\nse arroja nueva luz al abordaje, en el marco de una reconstrucción del\nmaterialismo histórico, de la emergencia del capitalismo cognitivo.
