Abstract
Quebec, Canada, has 88 covered bridges. These are wooden structures, topped by a roof, erected over a waterway or ravine and supported by trusses. Covered bridges can be classified by the number of trusses. The characteristics of the seven most common designs are described: Kingpost Truss, Queenpost Truss, Multiple Kingpost Truss, Town, Howe, McCallum and Quebec Town. Photos and illustrations are included for the different designs. The history of the covered bridge in Quebec is outlined. The greatest number of covered bridges was built between 1880 and 1889. The covered bridge design gradually became obsolete in the 1940s with the arrival of new materials and new techniques in bridge construction. Six covered bridges are described: the Powerscourt Bridge, the Des Rivieres Bridge, McDermott Bridge, the McVetty-McKerry Bridge, Felix-Gabriel-Marchand Bridge, and the covered bridge at Notre-Dame-des-Pins.
