Abstract
Au coeur de l’article : les propriétés assez particulières de l’oreille d’une population relativement bien définie, les jazzmen. Ces derniers ont en effet des jugements assez précis concernant la justesse d’intonation, qui sont en général à l’opposé de ceux qu’émettent (de façon généralement péremptoire) une autre catégorie de musiciens : ceux formés à l’art classique. L’expérience a été conduite de façon concrète à partir d’une chanson exécutée d’abord par Chet Baker (enregistrement historique), puis ré-exécutée, à notre demande, par un chanteur classique. L’analyse révèle de grandes différences du point de vue du système des hauteurs qui renvoient en fait, à deux conceptions catégorielles de la justesse, apparemment irréconciliables. Être jazzman suppose également d’avoir intégré une aptitude de mise en correspondance entre thème et variations, autant qu’entre harmonie et mélodie. Portant sur un standard bien connu de Charlie Parker de 1945, l’analyse met succinctement en évidence les aptitudes spécifiques de deux types de populations : jazzmen d’une part et musiciens classiques de l’autre, tous de haut niveau. Les résultats révèlent ici encore qu’il s’agit d’aptitudes clairement antagonistes et culturellement non partagées.
