Abstract
Burlington Transit (BT), located on the north shore of Lake Ontario in southern Ontario has a relatively low-density market, without a college or university. The region also has the highest percentage of car ownership in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The city took over the transit system a little more than 30 years ago. It is hoping that BT and other transit providers can help encourage alternative modes of transportation and reduce congestion. It was the first transit system in the GTA to have bike racks on all the buses. To increase ridership, it carries out targeted marketing campaigns, such as contacting all the retirement homes and taking a bus out to demonstrate how to ride the bus and read the schedule. Commuters are lured through special free days, such as on Clean Air Day and Canada Day. The agency uses those free ride days to carry out surveys in an effort to capture attitudes from less frequent riders. They reach out to younger riders by incorporating transit information into the curriculum of 7th, 8th and 9th graders.
