Abstract
U.S. Major airlines are back into an profit mode for the third quarter of 2003, showing an operating gain of $729.4 million, versus a $2.46 billion operating loss for the same period in 2003. Reasons for rebound include the suspension of the federal security tax which served as an invisible fare increase, record high load factors for many carriers, and tight cost controls. Despite these gains, analysts are concerned that this recovery may soon peak. The article presents an overview of financial results, as well as a comparison data for 2002 and 2003, for the following U.S. major airline parent groups: Alaska Air Group, AWA Holdings, AMR Corp., ATA Holdings, Continental, Delta, Northwest, Southwest, UAL Corp., and US Airways Group.
