Abstract
Las reuniones cumbre regionales satisfacen varios propositos diplomaticos, entre los que se incluyen la promocion de normas regionales, el impulso de iniciativas especificas de las diferentes agendas y la oferta de un foro eficiente para encuentros directos entre los lideres nacionales. No existe necesariamente una contradiccion entre las instituciones interamericanas y las subregionales. Actualmente, algunos paises de Latinoamerica visualizan reuniones cumbre regionales que excluyen, e incluso son hostiles, a Canada y a Estados Unidos, pero la historia sugiere que esta vision excluyente afrontara muchos obstaculos determinantes
