In a feature on heavy hauling, this article describes Canadian Pacific Railway Company's plans to extend friction management functions in a program called 100% Effective Friction Management. That involves replacing wayside rail gauge face lubricators on more than 3,000 km of main line. Top-of-rail modifiers have also been added. The goal is to reduce the historic rate of wear imposed by heavy trains, usually in the realm of 600 to 700 g of wheel and rail steel for each kilometer traveled. The article includes description of a system that has virtually eliminated gauge face wear. Photos illustrate some of the devices.
