Reform in air traffic control could provide a 12 percent savings in airline fuel, a low-hanging fruit in the effort to reduce carbon emissions, according to the author of this article. But those efforts are hampered by a lack of cooperation between air navigation service providers and the commercial user community except in a few locations. The article focuses on Airservices, a company that has had measurable impact on reducing aviation’s contribution to carbon dioxide emissions. Airspaces’ Brisbane Green Project represents the first integration of Required Navigation Performance (RNP) approaches and departures at 13 Australian airports. This initiative and another involving SAS and AIRE should be a wakeup call to those political leaders bogged down in the funding of the US NextGen and European SESAR projects. The author describes several other projects, including Nav Canada, the Northern Organized Track Structure, and Flex Tracks.
