Abstract
Montreal erlebte um 1900 als Handels- und Industriestadt ein goldenes Zeitalter. Hier konkurrierten anglophone und frankophone Eliten um die politische, wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Führungsmacht. Als Wahrzeichen oder Gründungsmythos spielte besonders der Mont Royal, ein für die Stadt symbolträchtiger Ort, bei diesen gesellschaftlichen Formierungsprozessen eine große Rolle. Die Studie bietet einen aufschlussreichen Einblick in das dichte Geflecht von ethno-kultureller und konfessioneller Konkurrenz, Klassenkonflikten, privaten und politischen Interessen, Macht und Raumpolitik und leistet damit zugleich einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Geschichte des nordamerikanischen Stadtraums und der kulturellen Rivalität
