This article describes the replacement of a 100-year-old, substandard railroad bridge in Greenwich, Connecticut. The Arch Street Bridge carries an average of 215 trains a day on four tracks over a major connector road. The goals of the project were to replace the old bridge, extend the elevated pedestrian platforms over Arch Street to allow for boarding and embarking of 10 passenger train cars, widen Arch Street below the bridge to improve traffic operations and provide safer pedestrian movement, provide stairs to access the extended pedestrian platforms, and upgrade the Greenwich railroad station to improve accessibility. The new bridge is a 100-foot-long simple-span, steel plate girder structure with a composite 13-inch-thick reinforced concrete ballasted deck with membrane waterproofing. The biggest challenge of the project was to replace the existing bridge while maintaining heavy railroad, vehicular and pedestrian loads in the area. To meet this challenge, an innovative technique was implemented involving the use of micropiles to support the foundations of the new bridge and top-down construction to accommodate the widening of the road and replacement of the bridge.
