Abstract
This article describes the expansion of the Edmonton, Canada, subway system, built originally from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. A key element is a transition from 26 meters below ground to the surface to connect to a planned 7.5-km southerly extension. Complications at the site are described. A map shows the various segments and when they were built. Geology is mixed, requiring special TBM gear, which is described. Segmental lining techniques are included, as are tunnel alignment details and backup tunneling equipment, which was dictated by the layout of sites and grades of the tunnel. Schedule is given, with contract award in January 2003. Technical challenges, primarily settlement, are described, including a figure illustrating settlement point locations and settlement behavior.
