The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) have very different specifications and test methods for cement. However, these differences are being minimized due to coordination efforts over the last few years. A strategic redirection within CSA accelerated this cooperation. This change included a policy to promote international harmonization where possible. Another goal was the development of a new cementitious material compendium that put all of the CSA cementitious material specifications into one publication and separated the test methods and equipment from previous standards. Over 100 differences were identified between the CSA and ASTM portland cement standards and test methods. A procedure has been developed, using task forces and technical committees, to harmonize the standards where possible and to provide written rationale where the CSA finds the ASTM standard unacceptable. The CSA will continue to reevaluate the technical differences as part of its standards development process.
