Abstract
This article describes how, amid the dunes of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) parched Empty Quarter, surveyors have been gathering data for the construction of the country's first railway. The article examines how the Shah Habshan Railway (SHR) is forming the nucleus of an ambitious network. Despite the economic crisis, rail projects continue to dominate transport investment in the Gulf Region. A great opportunity exists in the UAE, partly because there is no rail legacy. Union Railway Company can create a genuine logistics network designed from the beginning to meet the needs of the industry.
