Abstract
hyiHE first permanent Icelandic settlement in Canada was established J_ in the fall of 1875 in the territory of Keewatin some sixty miles north of Winnipeg. For a considerable period of time this settlement was virtually a self-governing colony with the power to rule invested in a duly elected district council which governed the settlement in accordance with a code of laws drawn up by the settlers themselves.1 The sentiments of these early Canadian Icelanders were reflected by the name which they selected for their settlement; they called it New Iceland.
