"In support of the company's policy. Written in part: 'To inquire into the qualifications of the Hudson's Bay Company for the colonization of Vancouver's Island.'-p. iv. In a letter to William Gladstone, dated 27 November 1848, James Fitzgerald made the comment: 'The whole turn of the book is sufficient evidence that the Company's purse has stimulated the authors [sic] brains.'-British Columbia historical quarterly, v. 13, p. 11.
