Abstract
In an era in which the promise of globalization continues to be seductive in many arenas, the concept of the nation is often considered to be old-fashioned, restricting or exclusionist. Some manifestations of nation are certainly past their use-by date, particularly if they do not accommodate change. The capacity to expand, modify or otherwise redefine nationhood appears to characterize Canada — at least at the rhetorical level — better than some cultures.
