In recent years, freight railways in Canada and the United States have had problems with wheels, through vertical split rim (VSR) wheel failures, in particular. As axle loads have increased, these have become more apparent. This article investigates the role of axial residual stress in those failures, in the face of no obvious cause or solution to the problem. Among other results, it was found that corrective machining of wheel tread damage can reduce the magnitude of compressive and tensile axial residual stresses in the wheel rim, in addition to restoring the flange and tread profile and removing tread damage and cracks. More frequent performance of this maintenance could reduce the number of VSRs on North America's heavy-haul network and, in turn, improve safety.
