Abstract
Hauling full payloads for an additional two to four weeks per year can significantly benefit truck-based industries-especially through improved harvesting efficiencies, reduced inventories and extended operating seasons. The benefits accruing to industry can be sizeable-haul season extension has been typically three to four weeks. One forest company accredits improved springtime road access and related operational changes with saving it over $4M (CAN) in 2004. In 2004, the British Columbia (BC) Ministry of Transportation implemented a program to exempt trucks with Tire Pressure Control Systems (TPCS) from seasonal weight restrictions on approved routes. The technical foundation for the program is research conducted from 2000 to 2004 by the Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada (FERIC), in cooperation with provincial ministries and a variety of BC forest companies. This paper presents details about the BC program, the background analysis and field trials, and describes an upcoming field trial with the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, Tembec Industries Inc. and FERIC in 2006.
