Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Ideologies and multilingual praxis in quebec: struggles and transformations in a space ruled by the new economy Linguistic power can take many forms in the workplace, notably around issues of multilingualism. Based on fieldwork conducted in 2002-2003 in an NGO in Montreal working in the area of sustainable development and fair trade, we will examine some of the new manifestations of long-existing tensions between French monolingualism and bi- or multilingualism, or between the promotion of a francophone 'quebecite' and a more pluralist inclusiveness. We will argue that the NGO members construct language in two contradictory but complementary ways: as a technical skill, or obversely, as an innate talent. The deployment of these two approaches permits them to maintain the NGO as a homogeneous francophone (discursive) space in spite of the multilingualism their activities demand, and to neutralize the contradiction between the competing ideological orientations its members share.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
