Abstract
The ventilation systems in most of the existing older subway systems have been designed for normal train operation, but not for emergency situations such as a train fire in a tunnel. The paper examines the undertaking of the Toronto Transit Commission to upgrade its existing ventilation system, to improve, within practical limits, the level of safety within its underground tunnels and stations.
