L’Apocalypse selon Michel Tremblay

Cet ouvrage cherche à montrer comment Michel Tremblay, auteur-phare du Québec des quarante dernières années, transforme au fil de son œuvre le mythe biblique de l’Apocalypse en un mythe littéraire personnel selon trois modalités. La première de ces modalités relève du théologique et correspond à la subversion de l’Incarnation, figure majeure du christianisme. Le sacrifice christique et le salut des Justes qu’il entraîne fait ainsi place dans l’œuvre tremblayenne à la représentation de la déchéance d’une famille québécoise contemporaine et de personnages martyrs ou messianiques inféodés à une transcendance d’inspiration païenne. La seconde modalité relève de l’historique et correspond à la mise en œuvre d’une dialectique’ entre la fin d’un temps et l’émergence d’un autre, conséquence d’une crise survenue dans l’Histoire. L’exploitation de la veine apocalyptique renvoie ainsi chez l’écrivain à la rupture épistémologique entre la « grande noirceur », instaurée par Maurice Duplessis à la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, et l’espérance suscitée au Québec par la Révolution tranquille à partir des années soixante. Enfin, la troisième modalité relève de la mise en abyme de la symbolique apocalyptique de l’ensemble de l’œuvre. Les productions des personnages-artistes tremblayens peuvent en effet être assimilées à de multiples apocalypses qui doublent l’œuvre-mère et qui dévoilent les mystères de l’origine et de la fin du Monde de l’auteur. Par sa dimension religieuse, historique et esthétique, l’œuvre de Michel Tremblay acquiert ainsi le statut de Livre total, nouvelle Bible de l’Humanité qui ne cesse de remettre en question la foi possible en une transcendance, en la connaissance, en l’homme et en l’art.
