Abstract
This article describes need for pre-project publicity and community input when major road closures or detours are planned. Computer visualizations of finished project was used in a Wisconsin repaving job, as well as various photomontages displayed in public information meetings. Project Web sites, updated at least once a week, are useful in highly compact urban areas. One county highway rebuilding saw the number of calls and complaints significantly reduced from expected volumes when a Web site was used to post updates and schedules. Signs that changed to reflect changing access conditions helped local businesses keep their customers apprised of routes to their stores when roadwork was under way. It is also important to maintain safe separations when streets are combined and closed. Remote-control robotic flagmen are being used in Ontario, Canada, and the technology is being tested for possible inclusion in the MUTCD.
