Abstract
This article offers a financial overview of the ten U.S. Major airlines for the year 2003, and the first quarter of 2004. Although the airlines posted a combined $1.6 billion loss for the first quarter of 2004, as compared to a $1.9 billion loss for the same period in 2003, industry analysts had hoped for a more optimistic picture. Fuel costs and overcapacity are through to be the culprits impacting the profitability of the airlines. A brief analysis, along with financial and traffic statistics, is given for the major U.S. airlines, which include Alaska, American, America West, ATA, Continental, Delta, Northwest, Southwest, United, and US Airways.
