Helmut Schmid (geboren 1942 in Ferlach/Osterreich) studierte nach der Schriftsetzerausbildung an der Schule fur Gestaltung in Basel. 1976 entwarf er das Kampagnezeichen fur den SPD-Wahlkampf unter Helmut Schmidt. Nach den Stationen Dusseldorf, Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal und Vancouver lebt Helmut Schmid seit 1981 als freischaffender visueller Gestalter in Osaka. In seinen Entwurfen verbindet er auf einmalige Weise die japanische Tradition mit der westlichen Moderne. So ist etwa Schmids Silbenschrift Katakana Eru aus der japanischen Produktverpackung nicht mehr wegzudenken. Die vorliegende Monografie dokumentiert und analysiert alle wichtigen Arbeiten von 1961 bis heute: visuelle Basiskonzepte, Schriftzuge, Logos, Produkt- und Packungsidentitaten, Plakat- und Buchgestaltungen. Sie schopft aus den Ergebnissen eines mehrjahrigen Forschungsprojektes am Fachbereich Design der Fachhochschule Dusseldorf. Helmut Schmids Werk wird damit endlich seinem Rang gemab vorgestellt.
