Charleston, South Carolina, is site of the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America. It replaces the Cooper River Bridge and connects the city to the town of Mount Pleasant, with a 1,005-m main span, 75 meters longer than the Canadian record-holder. Seismic design criteria requiring it to withstand earthquakes of various magnitudes led to use if highly ductile structures that are light enough to permit flexibility. Minimizing the number of shafts and using more reinforcing steel in the middle of the drilled shafts are two approaches. The article describes techniques and analyses to determine loads, resistance and other seismic and structural elements. It also describes wind tunnel testing and designs to make the bridge stable under conditions common to the location.
