Abstract
Pays de vieil enracinement catholique, la France est caractérisée aujourd'hui par un taux extrêmement bas de pratique régulière et par une pénurie chronique en personnels religieux. Ces repères mesurables de la perte d'emprise de l'institution ecclésiastique dans la société française ne prennent leur sens qu'au regard d'une analyse des remaniements qui s'opèrent à l'intérieur d'une culture religieuse transformée par son incorporation progressive à la modernité culturelle. L'effondrement du monde d'observances qui s'inscrivait dans une ancienne civilisation paroissiale, et la perte de plausibilité du rêve de reconquête chrétienne qui mobilisait, jusqu'à la fin des années 60, un christianisme militant particulièrement actif sont désormais des faits acquis: à l'uniformisation éthico-affective d'un catholicisme de communautés émotionnelles répond désormais la dissémination d'un "christianisme culturel" auquel s'alimentent, hors de tout contrôle institutionnel, les demandes identitaires les plus variées. L'article présenté ici s'emploie à cerner quelques aspects de ce processus de recomposition culturelle et religieuse.
