Abstract
This article describes a new high performance steel that was used in a bridge recently completed by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The steel in question, A710 grade B, was used for its high-performance in terms of strength and weldability. The bridge, which traverses the Canadian National Railroad tracks in Lake Villa, was built on two piers as a 430 foot long two lane multi-girder structure. The main alloy in the steel is copper, but it also contains small amounts of nickel, chromium, molybdenum, columbium, and titanium. The bridge was built at a cost of $5.75 million, with the new high performance steel adding an additional $100,000 than conventional steel would have cost.
