Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), operators of Toronto Pearson International Airport, administers a comprehensive security program, which is discussed in this article. Considered to be Canada’s busiest airport, Toronto Pearson has, like other international airports, been impacted by new security demands brought about by global events (e.g., 9/11 attacks, Gulf War). However, unlike other airports, Toronto Pearson decided to not to return to “normal” after the crisis period ended. Instead, the airport conducted a complete assessment of its security measures, separating those that worked from those that did not to make changes as needed. The result has been an airport security system that is continually prepared for the next security crisis. The author offers a detailed discussion of how these security improvements – from the adoption of new technologies to the emphasis on the visibility and training of airport security workers – has helped to make Toronto Pearson a model in airport security.
