Nul n’ignore l’intérêt que revêt la Vita Karoli d’Éginhard († 840) aux yeux des historiens du Moyen Âge. L’édition procurée par Georg Pertz en 1829 a été complétée à deux reprises, en 1880 et en 1911. Mais, dès 1912, Oswald Holder-Egger reconnaissait que l’œuvre était encore beaucoup trop mal connue.
