The Broadway Bridge in Portland, Oregon is one of only three Rall-type bascule bridges still operating in the United States. Ninety years after it opened, the bridge underwent a major renovation project aimed at upgrading the structure to ensure its continued service for years to come. This article describes one aspect of the renovation project, the use of an innovative composite material for the lift span deck. The bridges' lift span was redecked with fiber-reinforced polymer composite panels since this type of decking system was light enough to allow for continued use of the existing concrete counterbalances, motors and gear sets. The composite panels also offered a solid surface for vehicular traffic and could be installed in only two days with minimal disruption of traffic.
