Tests of pavement reinforcement products in the municipal district of Taber in southern Alberta, Canada, showed that geogrids could be useful supplements to standard repaving techniques. The site suffered from transverse cracks in asphalt concrete base pavement, which is prone to decay from freeze-thaw stresses that create voids in the concrete that in turn cause the asphalt to subside. Four materials were tested in a 1-km stretch of road, chosen for its flatness and consistent cracking patterns. 10 different repair methods were used, ranging from no repair to cold mill only to cold mill combined with application of each of the materials. In many instances, the material prevented cracks from recurring up to two years after treatment. A chart, specifications, and application methods are included.
