L’article parcourt une quinzaine de manuels de sémiotique en langue française, des « Éléments de sémiologie » de Roland Barthes (1964) à la réédition des Enjeux de la sémiotique par Anne Hénault (2012). L’objectif est de mettre en évidence les procédés par lesquels ce type d’ouvrage participe à l’institutionnalisation d’une discipline, en y instaurant des lignes de partage internes, en la dotant d’une forme d’historicité, en érigeant son panthéon, en la situant par rapport à d’autres disciplines, enfin en justifiant son actualité. Guidé par une méthodologie sociorhétorique, le propos vise à éclairer les gestualités spécifiques qui ont animé ce corpus de manuels.
