Abstract
This article details the quantity of red ink spilled by U.S. airlines in 2004 using hard numbers and tables to support the argument that this was a terrible year for airlines. The industry posted $7.5 billion in losses in 2004 with Delta Airlines posting the highest annual loss in history of $5.2 billion in a year, largely from the devaluing of some of its subsidiaries in the southeast part of the U.S. However, both airTran and JetBlue became major airlines with more than $1 billion in revenue in 2004. Though ATA went bankrupt, there was no major consolidation in the rest of the airline industry thanks to bailouts from U.S. taxpayers and a lenient a lenient court system.
