Structural health monitoring offers potential as an effective tool to prevent bridge collapse. This article describes some new and emerging technologies for continuous structural health monitoring of bridges. Both wired and wireless systems are being tested and used for substructure and superstructure monitoring. These systems use a variety of sensors to collect information on strain, vibration, cracking, displacement and other signs that may indicate that a bridge is in danger of collapse and in need of maintenance, repair or replacement.
