Abstract
El entorno en que vivimos y practicamos cirugía está cambiando en forma permanente y amenaza con hacer perder el equilibrio a la práctica de la cirugía. ¿Qué fuerzas ponen en riesgo ese equilibrio y qué podemos hacer los cirujanos para mantener la práctica de la cirugía sólida, pujante y en equilibrio? La situación es similar a la de la “roca en equilibrio” que se encuentra en la costa de Nueva Escocia, una de las provincias atlánticas del Canadá. Esta roca está expuesta a las inclemencias del tiempo —tormentas, vientos, nieve— y, sin embargo, sigue en equilibrio y ha estado así por muchos años. La práctica de la cirugía debe ser capaz de lograr esa “balanceo” —o adaptación— para mantener ese equilibrio necesario para continuar su avance en beneficio de su fin principal, el cuidado de nuestros pacientes.
