Ce texte présente une étude de l'évolution de la connaissance du catalan en Catalogne. Nous utilisons les données des quatre derniers recensements pour suivre l'évolution du phénomène (1975-1991). Après avoir présenté succinctement le cadre social, politique et juridique de la langue catalane en Catalogne, nous abordons la question de la nature des données utilisées et l'évolution globale de la connaissance linguistique dans la population. Puis nous examinons les facteurs qui ont contribué a l'évolution observée par une analyse plus détaillée des données. Nous parlons tout d'abord du rôle de l'éducation primaire et secondaire, puis nous abordons le thème de l'intégration linguistique des immigrants, groupe qui constitue encore la moitié de la population adulte de la communauté autonome catalane. Notre conclusion est optimiste quant aux tendances de l'évolutionrécente.
