Abstract
Œhe dominant image of Louis Riel in contemporary Canadian culture is arguably that of the peace-lover.1 The Metis politician and poet is the epitome of Christian selflessness who, even in war, never fails to offer the other cheek (Livesay 153); the prairie theocrat adored God and feared and loathed bloodshed (Howard 17); the spiritual guide of an oppressed and harmless people, fusils, sans canons (Frechette 284); the mystic who prevents his more pragmatic military lieutenant, Gabriel Dumont, from attacking the retreating NorthWest Mounted Police because it would be trop sauvage to do so (Dumont 127). In short, he is seen as the prophet of non-violence, the visionary who dreams of making heaven here in the NorthWest, where we can have peace between all people, no killing [...] (Wiebe 53). Riel's writings, however, reveal quite a different individual. Instead of rejecting violence in his struggle for Metis rights, he embraces it with a passion, often calling on God to avenge all the wrongs that, as he perceives it, have been done to him or his people. He threatens his nemesis, Sir John A. Macdonald, thus:
