L'interprétation du spectre de vibration du diphényle est reprise dans le but d'assurer la symétrie de la molécule en solution et d'étudier les couplages entre les deux noyaux aromatiques. Les attributions des spectres infrarouges et Raman de l'état solide et de la solution, entre 90 et 1650, 3 000 et 3 100 cm–1, sont appuyées par l'examen du spectre infrarouge du composé à l'état gazeux. La symétrie D2 est confirmée pour la molécule en solution. Un couplage entre les deux noyaux de la molécule se manifeste par l'éclatement en fréquences des deux vibrations de la molécule de biphényle issues d'un même type benzénique; presque toujours observé pour les vibrations de squelette, il l'est également pour des vibrations γCH et δCH.N.-B. — Dans l'article, les termes de mode (de symétrie) et type (de vibration) sont empruntés à une notation française; selon la notation internationale récente (Internatinal Union of pure and applied chemistry, physical chemistry division, commission on molecular structure and spectroscopy, N.R.C. Canada; Ottawa 1966) ils seraient respectivement remplacés par type de symétrie et mode normal ou vibration normale.
