Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to describe the vitality of small and medium-sized enterprises in Vorarlberg, Austria, as cases of Künz GmbH in Hard which leads the European market of container-crane, z-werkzeugbaugmbh in Dornbirn which is a spinout from a large company located in Vorarlberg and engaged in mold making, automation technology, micro injection molding and rapid prototyping, Vorarlberger Mehl in Feldkirch which is a small-sized flour mill, Vorarlberg Milch eGen in Feldkirch which is a cooperative of dairy farmers, and “Die Køje” Christian Leidinger GmbH in Bludenz which produces wooden beds of Zirbe or a kind of pine in the European Alps without metal fittings. All these companies achieved good business results in the last ten or twenty years long. Their products were at first distributed within Vorarlberg and its neighboring countries, namely east Switzerland or German area on the Lake Constance. Then they have gradually acquired markets in foreign countries on the basis of their respective technology and services for their customers. They have acquired a reputation of high-quality goods either by means of award or prize by some official organization or by means of appearance in some special magazine and homepage in their respective business field. The reputation seems to contribute to the development of their markets. Although Vorarlberg did not show a higher ratio of startups in proportion both to the population and to the number of existing companies in the last several years, successful startups had been steadily born in this region and some of them have grown to the international players since the mid-20th century. While several factors seem to contribute to the economic strength of this region, the present author is going to focus on the role of social organizations embedded in Voralrberg.
