Abstract
Deze Joodse man woonde voor de oorlog met zijn ouders in Leeuwarden, waar zij een manufacturenzaak hadden. Hij wilde liefst tamboer worden bij het Korps Mariniers, maar vanwege zijn slechte ogen en zijn technische opleiding werd hij in november 1938 stoker derde klas bij de Koninklijke Marine en volgde daartoe de opleiding in Den Helder. In 1939 liepen twee marine-schepen op Nederlandse mijnen bij Terschelling, met tientallen doden tot gevolg. Zelf werd deze man niet lang daarna afgekeurd voor de marine en ging hij naar de koopvaardij. Bij het uitbreken van de oorlog voer hij naar Engeland en ging varen voor de Britten. In oktober 1941 was hij weer welkom bij de Marine, op de trawler Klaasje - nu omgebouwd tot mijnenveger. De vissers aan boord hadden niet veel zin om te varen, maar het was dat óf de gevangenis in. Zo ging het in konvooi naar Canada, Amerika en Jamaica samen met de Britse, Nederlandse en Poolse Marine. Na de oorlog in Leeuwarden hoorde hij pas dat zijn familie van zowel vaders als moederskant was omgebracht in de Duitse kampen.
