Part two Sir Martin continues his account of the history of Oxford Instruments up to the 1980s, and he talks about advances on the cryogenic front, including the design of a helium-3 helium-4 dilution refrigerator, and the development of high specification superconducting magnets for NMR spectroscopy. Some of the technical challenges of working with superconducting materials are reviewed, and Sir Martin demonstrates how multi-filamentary superconducting wire is produced. The interview progresses to the appointment in 1971 of Barrie Marson as company chief executive, a decision to diversify into different markets with the formation of a medical electronics division, and further moves to encourage share ownership by the employees as confidence in the company's future increased. A discussion follows of the development of magnets for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and a decision to float the company on the London Stock Exchange in 1983 to raise capital to purchase and equip a large new factory for manufacturing MRI magnets for the medical market. In the final part of the interview, Sir Martin speaks of the successful joint venture between Oxford Instruments and Siemens for the production of MRI magnet systems.
