Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

In response to a planning condition on the redevelopment of land at 100 Rye Street, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, CM23 2HH, the Heritage Network was commissioned to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring on the development groundworks. The site is located at the northern end of Bishop's Stortford and on the western side of the river Stort. The site itself, centred on NGR TL 4882 2223, forms a rectangular plot of land on a steep south-east facing slope, bounded by Rye Street to the north-west, the river Stort to the east, Grange Paddocks car park to the south-west and water meadows to the north. The development entailed the demolition of the existing building and its replacement with a six bedroom detached dwelling on a similar footprint. The groundworks were divided into two elements; ground reduction for piling followed by a large trench for a retaining wall. Monitoring of the groundworks demonstrated a large degree of disturbance across the site. The demolition of the building and subsequent ground reduction demonstrated that the natural slope of the site had been heavily terraced. Monitoring also revealed a thick layer of post-medieval made ground, which was also demonstrated within the retaining wall trench but at a much lower level, indicating that the slope had been built up again after the initial terracing. Alluvium was revealed within the base of the retaining wall trench and a single worked flint of Bronze Age date was recovered. No other archaeological features, deposits or finds were encountered during the course of the investigation.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
