Abstract
In order to characterise the archaeological potential of the site of a proposed new development on land located at 22 Lucas Lane, Ashwell, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by David Price, Esq. to undertake an archaeological field evaluation. This work was a requirement of the planning consent granted by the local planning authority. The site lies within Area of Archaeological Importance 31, which suggests good potential for encountering archaeology from the late Bronze Age to the Post-medieval periods. The archaeological evaluation by trial trenching revealed a field boundary ditch, orientated north-south, which contained a base sherd of Roman pottery and some animal bone fragments which included an animal jaw.
