Abstract
Fieldwork: The total excavated area in the Brampton West Landscape block covered 78.32 hectares. The results of the geophysical survey and trenching evaluation were used to define the archaeological mitigation areas. TEAs 7A, 7C, 10, 11 and 12 were defined as 'Targeted Excavation Areas', and TEAs 7B, 8 and 9 were designated as 'Strip, Map, and Sample' areas. The oil pipeline which crossed TEAs 7 and 10 was excluded from excavation (Figure 1). Some areas within the designed excavation zones were not excavated, due to late changes made in the construction design late in the day or to unplanned construction works. These included: An area measuring c 8,800m2 in the central part of TEA 7B; An area measuring c 7,450m2 in the southern part of TEA 7C; A rectangular area measuring 4,700m2 in the south-western part of TEA 7C. (A series of smaller targeted trenches were carried out in this area in 2020, and the findings from these are included in this report); The south-eastern part of TEA 7A, measuring 17,900m2; An area measuring 6,800m2 in the south-western part of TEA 10; An area measuring 2,534m2 in the central part of TEA 11; Parts of TEA 8, including the eastern part of the northern field and the eastern and western parts of the northern field (This was stopped by agreement as minimal archaeology was uncovered); and The western quarter of TEA 9 (This was stopped by agreement as minimal archaeology was uncovered although three trenches were excavated in this area); The majority of the Brampton West Landscape Block was stripped and hand excavated between October 2016 and June 2018 by a team of up to 150 archaeologists at any given time. The north-western corner of TEA 7C was partly hand-excavated by volunteers on the 'Community Dig' in July - August 2018. A later phase of fieldwork, focusing on parts of TEA 7C and the south-western corner of TEA 10, was undertaken in November 2018 and January-May 2019. A final phase of fieldwork, comprising six targeted excavation areas in the south-western part of TEA 7C, was undertaken in July 2020. All works were undertaken in accordance with the Written Scheme of Investigation (Atkins CH2M, 2016), that responded to Cambridgeshire County Council's EIA Scoping Response setting out the archaeological investigation and archiving requirements of the scheme, along with the need for a community engagement programme as prepared by the overseeing Development Management Officer from Cambridgeshire County Council's Historic Environment Team. Metal detecting was carried out across all sites once they had been stripped and at regular intervals during their excavation. In addition, a metal detecting survey was carried out across TEA 7A prior to stripping, and a post-strip geophysical survey was undertaken at TEA 10 to aid in the identification of features. Post-Excavation: The preliminary grouping and stratigraphic sequencing of features presented in the assessment reports for TEAs 7-12 (MHI 2019a) is superseded here. Stratigraphic information recorded on site has been informed by the pottery and radiocarbon dates to provide a more detailed understanding of the chronology of archaeological sites across the Brampton West Landscape Block. In this report archaeological features have been grouped and assigned to periods using standardised terms and numeration in line with the scheme-wide methodology for the stratigraphic analysis using QGIS (MHI 2020). Chronological periods used in this report are based on the established period divisions used in Cambridgeshire and beyond (eg, Historic England's period list) and with consultation from pottery specialists. Some features have been sub-grouped to provide a more detailed understanding of specific features. As part of the post-excavation phase of work volumetric analysis was undertaken across Brampton West.
