Abstract
In order to investigate the archaeological potential of a proposed new development located on the site of Burgess Building, Wratten Road East, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owners to undertake a programme of targeted trial trenching. One trial trench was excavated across the northern half of the footprint of the proposed new dwellings. This revealed that the modern overburden is c.0.90m in depth and overlay a probable surface of crushed chalk, with lenses of crushed brick, which contained finds of late 19th/early 20th century date. Two pits were cut into this layer which contained finds indicative of late post-medieval domestic activity, including pottery and animal bone. Two make-up or levelling layers of redeposited natural were identified below the chalk surface. The lower of these produced broken pieces of post-medieval peg tile. One edge of a possible cut feature was recorded cutting the natural silty sand brickearth below the lower levelling layer. Broken peg tile pieces, of possible 18th century date, were recovered from its fill. This appears to be the earliest feature on the site. No features, deposits or finds pre-dating the late post-medieval period were encountered on the site.
